Welcome to the Next Chapter of Book More Women
Eight years ago, I accidentally started a movement. Frustrated by a festival's overwhelmingly-male lineup, I edited their poster to make the disparity visible. Then I did it over and over again and Book More Women was born. The graphics spread and expanded a conversation that hasn’t stopped since.
We've tracked gender diversity at music festivals for 8 years, posted over 500 lineups and researched thousands of artists. We watched representation climb from 28% in 2018 to a high of 40% in 2024. We pushed the conversation into rooms it hadn't reached before. Many of you were part of that, through your comments, support, and your belief that this work mattered.
But last year, gender representation at major U.S. festivals decreased for the first time since we began tracking. That's when we knew that awareness alone isn't enough anymore. That’s when we decided to do more.
I'm thrilled to announce that Book More Women is officially relaunching as a fiscally-sponsored project of Fractured Atlas while we pursue our own 501(c)(3) status. We're moving from presenting the data to putting it to work.
We have a small, passionate team and a Board of Directors of working artists and industry folks who have been working hard to build a solid foundation for this next chapter.
Here's what's launching first:
BOOKED: Our festival partnership program supporting organizers in setting measurable equity goals and providing opportunities to underserved artists
MEASURED: Our investigative podcast exploring power and gatekeeping in the music industry, with a first season zeroing in on the music festival
DATA AND RESOURCES: We’ll keep providing the numbers you expect, and digging in further to reveal what needs to change. Plus, we’re dedicated to unlocking knowledge and resources that is too often inaccessible
We need your support to solidify this groundwork.
To make this vision a reality, we are launching our first-ever crowdfunding campaign with a goal of $25,000. These funds will build the programming as well as the legal, digital, and personnel infrastructure required to turn Book More Women into a permanent resource for the music community.
Contributions today will come with a variety of thank you perks, including our exclusive relaunch t-shirt and even a private banjo lesson with our Board member, the Juno Award-winning Kaia Kater!
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR RELAUNCH TODAY: If you are in a position to make a tax-deductible donation, any amount will help us work towards our vision of a more equitable music industry:
CROWDFUNDING CAMPAIGN: See rewards and donate today
BECOME A MONTHLY DONOR: Help sustain this work year-round
DONATE BY CHECK OR OTHER MEANS: Reach out to hello@bookmorewomen.com
All donations made via Fractured Atlas are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
This relaunch marks a turning point. We are no longer just documenting inequity. We are building the tools to fix it.
Thank you for being part of this story. Let's build a better music ecosystem for all of us - together.
With gratitude,
Abbey Carbonneau
